Southern Tier Success Story
Emerson Network Power
–
Delivering peace of mind
from Binghamton, NY to its customers around the world
There’s just about nothing more frustrating than a power
outage, except a disruptive electrical failure that creates
havoc on your vital business systems. In Binghamton,
New York,
Emerson Network Power manufactures power quality and
surge protection equipment to protect mission-critical
operations from those electrical malfunctions and keep your
business connected. And that power protection is key
in today’s business climate.
“Emerson is THE best in the power filtering and surge
suppression industry and we are proud to call it a New York
State business,” said Empire State Development Southern Tier
Regional Director Kevin McLaughlin.
“Its products and people make a difference in the lives in
companies around the world, providing peace of mind first
and foremost.”
Emerson Network Power has called Binghamton home since 1971
but, just a few years ago, Emerson announced it would take
its commitment to the community even further with an
expansion—the building of a new 40,000 square foot
headquarter facility in Binghamton’s Charles Street Business
Park. Today, that state-of-the-art facility is up and
running with the industry’s most sophisticated research and
development laboratory.
“By making this investment, our skilled researchers and
engineers have the resources at their command to further
enhance our company’s reputation for innovation in guarding
against electrical spikes, transients, surges and other
threats that can affect power quality,” said William Fierle,
president, Emerson Network Power Surge Protection, Inc.
Emerson Network Power has routinely shown that it will
invest in new technologies and Empire State Development
supports that ongoing commitment. The project was, in
part, made possible by a $1 million investment by New York
State as part of its “City by City” economic development
initiative. The Broome County Industrial Development
Agency matched the state’s investment with an additional $1
million to provide the necessary infrastructure and
finishing touches to the Charles Street Business Park, a
33-acre site in the First Ward, where Emerson Network Power
now makes its home as an anchor tenant. One of the
primary stumbling blocks for development at the site was the
high cost to make it “shovel ready,” including roads, sewer,
water, electric, gas and landscaping. This financial
commitment leveraged a major private sector investment on
the property from Emerson with additional development to
come.
The state also provided Emerson with a
$325,000 grant to assist with project expenses in
the construction of its new $5.9 million facility.
Emerson Network Power’s Surge Protection headquarters offer
world class engineering and laboratory facilities, as well
as additional space to accommodate future growth in
Binghamton.
“Not only has Emerson consistently demonstrated its
commitment to the Binghamton area, it is candid in its
confidence of its employees and the Southern Tier’s
workforce,” said McLaughlin. “With its new facility,
Emerson will be able to support it plans for growth and
demonstrate its world-leading technologies in power
production to visitors from around the world.”
Emerson benefits from the southern tier region of New York
State’s low cost of living, open spaces, strategic location
and advanced highway infrastructure, all of which make it
attractive to a wide range of businesses and industries.
Home to prominent universities, such as Binghamton
University and Cornell, the region also boasts a
highly-educated workforce, especially in its industry
clusters, such as manufacturing, flight simulation, defense,
distribution and insurance.
Both New York State and Emerson Network Power are committed
to investing in new technologies and maintain confidence in
the future. Both are willing to tackle challenges.
Both are spurring private investment and economic
development — “powering” the way for economic expansion in
the Southern Tier of New York State.
